2005 Calendar is Coming

September 16, 2004

Plans for a 2005 Calendar featuring select black and white and color fine art photographs from my portfolio are well underway. Some of the images will be pulled from previously published work on Momentary Shadows as well as images that have never seen the light of day from my archives.

I intend to have the images selected and proofed in time to have the calendar available on Cafe Press by the middle of October.

Ellen Land-Webber - Photographer

The fire and my love for photography is one that goes back to my earliest childhood memories. Had it not been for other life changing events I would have persued my passion and became a professional photographer. As of late my interest (or I should say my desire) in becoming active in photography again has been re-ignited.

While I was doing some Googling today for things related to some photography projects I am working on, I stumbled across some of Ellen Land-Weber's work. Ellen was my photography professor while I was attending Humboldt State.

The Everyman Photo Contest

August 04, 2004

The Everyman believes that anyone who has ever taken pictures in their life, has taken good pictures. One of the primary differences between professional and non-professional photographers is how reliably they can get the good shot. Because, photography, like any art, is meant to capture a moment, convey a feeling, tell a story, it is erroneous to believe that in order for a photo to be effective or artistic it must have formal composition, ideal lighting or, and most importantly, be taken by a professional.

Fun! Just think of the entertainment value in selecting 3 images from my negtative portfolio to enter into the contest.

Interesting Photo Series on Boats

March 15, 2004

Thanks to Jason for this wonderful find. I love photo sites. In fact, I am very much enamored with Photo Blogs as of late.

Here's a great look at old boats via this stunning online photo essay. The power of the colors and exposures in some of these prints are impressive.

Mixed Media Print circa 1992

February 23, 2004

The Power of a Hangover © 1992 Art Fernandez

This is a print with a story behind it. It was one of those experiments using traditional print advertising, compositing and silver gelatin glossy photo paper. Exposure set to f-4.5 and 15 seconds of exposure...poof...dark room magic without any PhotoShop (I think PhotoShop was at version 1.0 in those days).

The irony of the title is that I really was hung over at the time. I think I was pledging my college fraternity and had to be in the photo lab at 8 am that morning...ouch.

This is a one of a kind print. It shows what it totally possible with traditional photography in the dark room.

Coming Soon, new photo site

Well, all that B&W negative scanning was bound to get me enthusiastic about another project. So, as I started going through 10K images dating back to 1986, I got the idea for a new site that could feature and sell these images online.

It also allowed me to figure out how to keep and make a potential profit off of one of my oldest domain names. More details to come.

Classic Humboldt County Photo

O.K. I sort of lied...I am in Blog hibernation...not retirement. Took the day off to recharge and relax and get some perspective. I have been going through my 10,000+ black & white negatives from my professional portfolio and ran accross a print that I sort of forgot I took.

'Still making changes though on all the levels mentioned before.

There's more on momentaryshadows, but I am going back to the negatives and will be rescanning and processing them for a new site.

Ah Maine, Fall Colors...photos and thoughts

December 13, 2002

maine_sommesvillebridge.jpg
I really enjoyed going back to Maine in October. Although the weather did not cooperate as much as we had hoped, we loved going back to Bar Harbor (Bah Habah) and touring around Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island.

The more I saw of the area, the more I can imagine myself living up there in a small cabin in the summer and working out of Boston for the remainder of the year.

This is the view from Jordan Pond within Acadia. We spent an entire afternoon having tea and popovers in the outside garden at the tea house there. It was cold...good thing we had tea and a few sweaters.
